THE REPORT
The constitution of the Republic of Botswana of 2003 provides for the right to a clean and healthy environment and for the protection, safeguard and promotion of the environment to everyone who lives in Botswana. In the same context, the Environmental Impact Assessment Act (Act No. 6 of 2005) (Cap. 65:07) determine the modalities of protection, conservation and promotion of environment in Botswana. There are other laws on mineral, water, pollution land management that are useful among others that are used to protect the environment. The Department of Environmental Affairs of Botswana (DEAB) is mandated to produce a national state of the environment report every two years to inform the environment decision making process in the country and provide environmental information to the public.
BOTSWANA-SOERS
Under the GEF funded project on Capacity Building, The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is extending support to the Government of Botswana in environmental institutional strengthening for national reporting. The overall objective is to develop an interactive web-based module for the State of Environment Report to enable easy access by decision makers and facilitate easy update for timely dissemination of information, including emerging issues. The portal will also support the preparation of a scenario chapter based on the narratives in the thematic chapters to inform policy outlook.
