An assessment of rainfall variability in northern Egypt |
بحث أكاديمي |
2021 |
أرصاد جوية المياه الزراعة |
|
The aim of the current study is to monitor and analyze the rainfall variability and to predict the aridity in northern Egypt. To implement that, parametric and non-parametric statistical methods were used for the rainfall data at 13 meteorological stations scattered along the study area from 1947 to 2010. Standard normal homogeneity test, linear regression forecasting methods, Mann-Kendall’s test for trend, time-series plots, the trend-to-noise ratio as a test of significance for the annual and seasonal rainfall, the annual rainfall intensity, inter- and intra-annual variability, and seasonality were calculated. High inter-annual and intra-annual rainfall variability has been observed over space and time. Synchronously, different temporal patterns of annual rainfall were noticed at different stations, and most of the trends were not linear and significant. The results indicated an increase in the number of years, which receive less than the average rainfall. In addition, a marked variation in seasonal rainfall was observed every decade, and the rainfall variability of autumn was higher than that in winter and spring while summer experienced no rainfall and, hence, no variability. In the future, precipitation will decrease overall the region with an increase in temperature for all stations, where the existence of droughts may possibly arise in northern Egypt based on the ensemble mean of multi- Coordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment models under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 emission scenarios. The outcomes of this research can be beneficial for drought hazard mitigation as well as for the preparation and managing agricultural activities in the study area. |

The impact of COVID 19 on air pollution levels and other environmental indicators - A case study of Egypt |
بحث أكاديمي |
2021 |
أرصاد جوية الصحة |
|
The outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) not only affected health and economics, but also its effect extended to include other aspects, such as the environment. Using Egypt as a case study, this paper presents the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on air pollution levels by studying nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter represented in absorbing aerosol index (AAI), carbon monoxide (CO), and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The paper also highlights the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on other environmental indicators including environmental noise, medical and municipal solid wastes. The paper presents the Egyptian COVID-19 story from its different angles including the development of confirmed COVID-19 cases, containment measures from the government, the impact on the country’s economy and the national energy consumption so as to effectively evaluate the effect on both the air pollution levels and the other studied environmental indicators. For the other environmental indicators, a strong link was observed between COVID-19 lockdown and the reduction in environmental noise, beaches, surface and groundwater pollution. For environmental noise, this has been confirmed by officially governmental announcements which reported that the level of environmental noise in Egypt was reduced by about 75% during the lockdown period. On the other hand, there are some negative effects, including an increase in medical solid waste (from 70 to 300 ton/day), municipal solid waste, as well as a less efficient solid waste recycling process. For air pollution levels, the data were obtained from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and European Space Agency satellite data sets. The data for the lockdown period in 2020 have been extracted and compared to the corresponding months in the selected baseline period (2015–2019) to identify the effect that the lockdown period had on the air pollution levels in Egypt with focus on Cairo and Alexandria governorates. It was found that the AAI decreased by about 30%, the NO2 decreased by 15 and 33% over Cairo and Alexandria governorates, respectively, and that the CO decreased by about 5% over both governorates. In addition, the GHG emissions in Egypt were reduced by at least 4% during the pandemic. In contrast, ozone levels increased by about 2% over Cairo and Alexandria governorates. It can be concluded that the implemented containment measures during COVID-19 pandemic had resulted in both positive and negative environmental impacts. The positive environmental impacts are not sustainable and deterioration on them is expected to occur after the lockdown as it was before the pandemic. Therefore, stricter laws must be enacted to protect the environment in Egypt. |

The Possible Impacts of Different Global Warming Levels on Major Crops in Egypt |
بحث أكاديمي |
2021 |
أرصاد جوية الزراعة |
|
Climate change implications are a severe risk to food security and the economy. Global warming could disturb the production of both rainfed and irrigated agriculture thru the amplify of yield water requests in many areas. In this study, the fast-track projections available through the Inter-Sectors Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISI-MIP) were presented and analyzed to assess the effects of two global warming (GW) levels (1.5 and 2.0 °C) on the maize and wheat yields in Egypt. Outcomes proposed spatial variations in the effects of temperature change on crop yield. Compared with the referenced situation, an observed national average change in wheat yield about 5.0% (0.0% to 9.0%) and 5.0% (−3.0% to 14.0%) under GW1.5 and GW2.0 respectively. While for maize yield, the change in national average about −1.0% (−5.0% to 3.0%) and −4.0% (−8.0% to 2.0%) under GW1.5 and GW2.0 respectively. GW1.5 could be helpful for wheat yield, but the positive effect decayed when the warming level reached 2.0 °C overhead the pre-industrial level. Nevertheless, the possible deviations to Egypt’s maize production under the GW1.5 and GW2.0 scenarios are unclear where the models do not agree with the sign of change. Adjusting the temperature rise within 1.5 °C would diminish the yield reduction, as it is an extraordinary priority to safeguard crop production. To achieve Progress of innovative agronomic managing plans and swapping to additional drought-resistant crops may be valuable for coping with climate change in regions vulnerable to yield decline. |
