Introduction: The overall objective of this portal is to identify and map the areas that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts and sea level rise, specifically in the northern coastal areas of Egypt, the adjacent fertile Nile Delta, and other populated places. The vulnerability map could be used to provide information to policymakers, the scientific community, and the public at large that can lead to adjustments to the country’s management plan and disaster risk reduction strategy. The portal could be a useful tool to better inform decision-makers of different adaptation options. It allows users to develop different scenarios to create an understanding of who and where the most vulnerable communities are that could be affected by the potential risk of climate change. The interactive map will provide analysis on the number of affected by various types of extreme weather events and the impacts of climate change. The portal provides answers on why these areas are at risk. A vulnerability map of Egypt is also useful in the prevention and preparedness of disaster management and in mapping low risk investment opportunities. "Vulnerability is a function of the type, magnitude, and rate of climate variation to which a system is exposed, as well as its sensitivity and adaptability" (IPCC 2001, p.995). Thus, vulnerability can be defined in terms of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. The portal is mapping the degree to which a system is susceptible to, or unable to cope with, adverse effects of climate change, including climate variability and extremes.

Adaptive capacity refers to "the ability of a (human) system to adjust to climate change (including climate variability and extremes), to moderate potential damages, to take advantage of opportunities, or to cope with the consequences .

Sensitivity

Sensitivity is defined by IPCC as “the degree to which a system is affected, either adversely or beneficially,by climate-related stimuli.This includes population density and protected areas. These layers are overlaid on exposure layers (sea level rise, floods, drought etc.) and adaptive capacity data to identify and delineate the most vulnerable areas to climate change. Vulnerability data will be categorized in three categories namely; exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity.
