The timeline of the project is spread on 2 years where the 1st year is dedicated to capacity development on GAPs on GI, procurement process of equipment, data collection on GI registration and preparations for the drafting process code of practice.2nd year is dedicated to registration of GI, publication of code of practice, marketing of GI products using the purchased equipment for preparation and transportation. On 19th December 2019 Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) entered into agreement to perform a study addressing the data collection survey on “Reduction measures for single use plastic bags consumption in Egypt”. The aim of this study is to support addressing plastic pollution in Egypt and pave the way for alternatives for Single Use Plastic Bags (SUPB) and the enabling technologies, as well as supporting development of policy and regulatory frameworks necessary for the vision of reducing SUPB, with focus on supporting future cooperation with Japan in this field. The study activity is in line with CEDARE’s ongoing activities advocating Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and with recent activity in the SwitchMed Demo Project providing the first solid steppingstone in Egypt for addressing this pressing topic. This study shall accordingly meet the following objectives: • Develop a baseline study providing an overview of the value-chain and life cycle of SUPB and associated marine plastic litter, and past and current efforts to address the associated adverse impacts and assess the enabling environment for providing alternatives.• Assess and develop plans for technically, environmentally, and socially viable interventions (plans, policies, programs, and projects) to address SUPB, including necessary regulatory framework interventions, economic tools, and incentive programs, and technologies and competences needed, leading to identification of opportunities for private sector to play an active role and a plan for next step, with priority to prospects for cooperation with Japan.

Spatio- temporal Resilience mapping online tool for Egypt (ReMOTE)

2020

2021

جمهورية مصر العربية -مشروع قومي

The ReMOTE institutional link between the University of Salford (UK), the National Research Centre (Egypt), CEDARE and DCarbon, is to bridge the gap by developing an analytical mapping tool to analyse and map the population that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts in Egypt. The methodology used relies on categorising climate and socio-economic vulnerability data in three categories namely; exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. An online spatial portal will be developed to overlay Geographic Information System to calculate the most vulnerable areas according to the identified IPCC criteria and definition. A mobile app will be developed to allow different stakeholders use the data, examine different scenarios and visualize the most vulnerable communities in Egypt. Results of this project provide a platform to enhance the science-policy interface to improve policy-making and planning towards better management of the negative impacts of climate change in Egypt and integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and national plans.

The C3SD-NRC will play a vital role in establishing research-based methodologies for addressing climate change and its impacts, and in developing sustainable solutions for vulnerable areas in Egypt and the region. It will also provide technical and scientific support to decision makers in the governmental and nongovernmental sectors to bridge the science-policy gap.
