warming and rise in sea level would continue for many centuries. Backed up by new studies and
observations, the IPCC projects the following regional-scale changes (UNEP, 2009):
? Most warming will happen over land and at the highest northern latitudes, and least over the
Southern Ocean and parts of the North Atlantic;
? Contraction of the area covered by snow will also lead to an increase in the depth at which most
permafrost will thaw and to a decrease in the extent of sea ice;
? Increase in the frequency of extremes of heat, heat waves and heavy precipitation; and
? A likely increase in tropical cyclone intensity.
