CASE STUDY
Dedicated environmental information centres
Dedicated environmental information centres were established in many countries in Europe
and Central Asia under the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in
Decision making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention). If
equipped with the necessary means, they provide access to environmental information
for the public. They initiate debates through round tables and meetings, especially among
NGOs.
In West Asia, The Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) (http://www.
agedi.info/en/agedi/show.jsp) which is a collaborative response initiated by the United
Arab Emirates government is expected to build a replicable, networked, adaptive, and
working model for the development and use of high quality spatial environmental
data and information to bridge the environmental data and information gap between
developed and developing countries. This model is ultimately to support sustainable
decision and policy making. An e-portal is still under construction at the University of
Emirates. The link is http://www.geoportal.ae/
