expected health effect beside the cost of alternative freshwater source, land degradation and
reduced income from crops, reduced properties/farms value, loss of the recreational value of
water and eco-tourism etc are some of the impacts of the deterioration of water resources
in Al Batinah Region northern Oman.
To overcome this problem, several responses have been taken in terms of policies and Abu Dhabi, UAE
projects such as:
1. RD82/88, Water Resources as a National Treasure
2. RD29/2000, Law on protection of water resources
3. RD14/2001, Law on conservation of the environment and prevention of pollution.
4. RD15/2001, Law on protection of sources of potable water from pollution
5. MD13/95, Registration of existing wells, new well permits and Organization of wells and
aflaj.
6. MD193/2001, for Wadi Ma’awil wellfield protection zones.
7. MD421/1998, Regulations for septic tanks, soak-away pits and holding tanks
8. MD18/1993, Regulations for the management of hazardous waste.
9. MD17/1993, Regulations for the management of Non Hazardous Waste
10. MD145/1993, Regulation of wastewater reuse and discharge
11. Increasing STP capacity
12. Desalination plant installation
13. Recharge dam building
14. Public awareness
15. Water metering project
